For quite some time I have been searching for the perfect dance class with one catch….it had to be held during the day. The evenings are off limits due to the never-ending activities for my children. I have searched high and low….ball room….ballet…hip hop… anything really. Do you know how hard it is to find dance class held during the day?! Recently when searching for classes I came across Pole Dance Charlotte Fun & Fitness Dance Studio. Pole dancing. Ok, so it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a “dance class” but hey…it’s still dancing. Last week my best friend came to visit and I thought this would be the perfect time to attend a class. I quickly registered online after she agreed (thanks to a couple of glasses of wine! lol) .

On the day of class, I had NO idea what to expect. Was I going to walk into a room full of strippers? Was everyone going to be extremely fit? Were they going to look at me as a crazy suburban housewife? Could I really swing myself around a pole? I really didn’t have a clue and boy was I nervous! As soon as we walked in, we were immediately greeted by Kelly Wood, owner and instructor, and immediately welcomed by our fellow classmates. There were only 7 of us and that included the instructor. There were all fitness levels and I certainly didn’t feel as though I were in a class created just for professional dancers. Kelly said to me  “I will teach you performance and presence but you are on your own with lap dances”. I loved that. She was truly about technique, performance but most of all fitness.

So….what did the class entail? Well…for starters it was 90 minutes long. Yes…90 minutes. 90 minutes of any class is hard work but multiply that by 10 for Pole Fitness. We had 30 minutes of choreography, 30 minutes of pole tricks and 30 minutes of pole fitness. Talk about a work out! I couldn’t move for two days. I seriously used muscles that I didn’t know existed and I consider myself to be in semi decent shape. Aside from getting a great workout, I had a GREAT time. Kelly is so talented and takes time to help you improve your moves. The students were awesome as well. We laughed and celebrated achievements together. One girl told me she has gone from a size 24 to a size 8 incorporating Pole Fitness into her exercise routine.  That’s incredible!

I will certainly be back with a membership! In fact, I’ve spoken about this class to I think any and everyone who will listen. It was that good. So, while it’s not what most would consider a normal dance class…for me…it’s perfect. Dance, fitness and fun.

Want to see a peek of what we learned? Watch this video. The first 43 seconds was taught to us in class. And while I could ‘get by’ with the routine…I certainly have a LONG way to go.

We’ve done a lot from that first 40 seconds as well. But we didn’t put the 2 walking spins together. And we didn’t do that back hook spin with only one leg. So now I have things to try.

In the end we put together everything I learned, which I liked. And they have us doing pull ups with the pole at the beginning to build up our strength.

I haven’t done a split in years, must practice.
