After being asked time and time again what I use to take care of my skin, I decided that it was time to write on men's grooming. Many of you know that I have spent many years in the beauty industry, but most don't know that I spent a portion of my career as the Director of Education for The Art of Shaving. I traveled the US and London training men of all ages how to take better care of their skin. I wanted to share with you some products and tips to help you look your best.
Let me start by saying that I believe in two major anti-aging secrets not only for men but for everyone. The first of these is exfoliation. The second is exercise. Let's start with exfoliating. For those that do not know, it takes 28 days for a skin cell to come to the surface of the skin. In an ideal world, these little "guys" come to the surface and slough off with no help. However, due to what we expose our skin to (environmental assaults, lack of hydration, diet, etc.) we need to give the skin cells a little extra help. That is why exfoliation is so important! One very important thing to mention is that your exfoliator needs to consist of perfectly round spheres that simply roll on the skin removing the dead cells and revealing a brighter, younger complexion. I would like to take this opportunity to recommend what I use which is Nivea For Men Revitalizing Face Scrub (Approx $5). This scrub is PERFECT and believe me I've tried them all ranging from prestige brands to mass brands and this is definitely one of the best.
Next…exercise. Exercising not only helps our mind decompress, but it has great benefits to the skin. By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin. The resistance created during exercise also helps to improve skin's elasticity. I could go on and on, but bottom line: MOVE MORE!
To recommend a few more items that are essential to achieving your best skin, let me start with a serum. I know, I know, I've already lost some of you guys, but hang with me. Why is a serum so important? Serums actually offer greater anti-aging benefits than a moisturizer. It is more concentrated so it goes to work more readily when applied to the skin offering increased cell renewel and a radiant glow. Adding a serum to your daily routine will also help your moisturuzer and eye product work even better. My favorite serum for men is When hope is not enough by Philosophy (Approx $40). So, two more things… A great moisturizer (with sunscreen) and a great eye cream or balm. My favorite moisturizer to recommend is L'Oreal Men's Expert Vita Lift Anti-Wrinkle & Firming Moisturizer with UVA/UVB Sunscreen SPF 15 (Approx $11). Finally your eyes need some attention too as this is the area where we start to notice the first signs of aging. I am obsessed with two eye products. First is Kheil's eye balm (Approx $22). This is the ideal product and texture for men. It literally erases time around the eye area. Finally, I obviously have to recommend a product from my brand, iMpact color cosmetics. For those boys/men who like a little extra help, I suggest using i'M humble all-in-one highlighter and eye balm ($17). I use this everyday. Not only does it hydrate the skin around the eye with Vitamin E, but it also adds soft light to the eye area blurring our imperfections, fine lines and wrinkles.
