Queen City Pretty:Susan Hilger

This week’s Queen City Pretty is well known in our community for many reasons. Not only is she involved with various charity organizations but she’s also the co-owner of S.J. Hilger Interiors and the owner of Green Market Girl. This well rounded woman is Susan Hilger.

Susan came to Charlotte over 20 years ago and has made quite the name for herself. Aside from being the co-owner of S.J. Hilgers, she is the founder of the first ever Eco Cuff, a “green” earth-friendly wood bracelet. I think these pieces of wood jewelry are fabulous. Not only are they HOT but they are a greatway to utilize wood waste.

When Susan isn’t working, she’s volunteering her time to organizations such as Project H.A.L.O, Children’s Law Center and Court Watch.

Outside of work and volunteering, her passions are her home life, her pups, yoga, running and riding her bike.

Your Eco Cuffs are a huge hit, what was your inspiration? Our larger business used to throw away so much wood that was cut off in the process of making furniture and built-ins. I am always brainstorming ways to use our wood.I asked Tim, my partner in crime and life, if he thought we could create a wood cuff and over time, we figured it out. We also make coasters (inspired by a bracelet I bought in a museum in Denmark), canes (great sellers), and birdhouses (all birdhouse proceeds go to Project HALO).

What is your beauty product must have? A lip balm or gloss

If I were to peek in your makeup bag, what would I find? Mascara, Lip gloss, eye pencil, a mirror and an Eco Cuff ;)?

What spa/salon service can you not live without and where do you go to get this service done?
I love new hair and like to change it up.  I treat myself to a visit to Hair Klaudt every month for cut and color

Who is your beauty icon? Samantha Smith, a local Charlotte make-up artist. She completely transformed my look for me, and she has an uncanny ability to make each of us feel oh so pretty. She has nice little tricks up her sleeve for any flaw.

What is your definition of Beauty? When a person feels comfortable in their own skin, embracing their uniqueness, whether it be a physical feature or a personality characteristic, confidence, an infectious laugh, a genuine smile.

Any last words? I’m so honored to be nominated for this interview and grateful to all of my beautiful women friends who surround and support me every day. I couldn’t do any of this without my tribe.

I love getting a new hair cut and style, too! It seems to make all the difference! Speaking of which…I’m over due!
