Creating Memories by Taking the ‘Tybee Polar Plunge’

The holidays are over and everything has returned to normal at my home. It’s very quiet now that my children have gone back to school and my family has returned to their life in England. This Christmas was about experiences for me. I wanted to give my family memories to hold onto vs material items they’d forget about, get bored of, and outgrow. For Christmas, my husband and I gifted our children, my sister in law, niece, and nephew with a NYE trip to Tybee Island. While this time of year is not your typical beach weather, I thought it would be a nice getaway. Little did I know Tybee Island holds a pretty cool event every year on New Years Day benefitting the Tybee Post Theater. The Tybee Polar Plunge! We really didn’t know what we were in for!

The event began with a ‘Gang of Goofs’ contest and parade. My children were so cold they had to go back to the car during this. It was around 33 degrees outside but ‘felt like’ 21! The plunge hadn’t even begun and I already couldn’t feel my toes.

The proceeds from the Tybee Polar Plunge go toward the continuing restoration and programming of the Tybee Post Theater.  This movie house was built in 1930 by the Army.  So, this was all for a good cause and an insane way to begin the New Year! Despite the cold, there was an incredible turnout. Many dressed in wacky costumes ready to take on the sea.

She was screaming the entire time but said she can’t wait to do it again!

Even my husband and son joined in on the silly costumes sporting these ‘way too small’ pink tank tops.

My niece said it was much colder in Tybee Island that back home in England!

My sis in law and I right before the run. She was crazy enough to run in her bathing suit. I chickened out and left my leggings on.

I decided to video the Tybee Polar Plunge and the reactions of those around me. It was the coldest I had ever been in my life yet the funniest thing I have ever experienced. Just watch the video and see for yourself!

So, the question is. Would I ever do the Tybee Polar Plunge again? YES, YES, YES! Ok-while at the time, I was terribly cold to the point of tears, the EXPERIENCE will be with my family and I forever. It was so much fun and we are so happy we did this together. I now know what to pack next time. MORE LAYERS and socks!

Have you done a Polar Plunge like the Tybee Polar Plunge before? Share your experience in the comments below! What other activities or trips do you and your family take to create memories?  I’ll have plenty more memories to share with you, such as my trip to Paris with my husband.
