Last fall during my visit to Greece I had the opportunity to hunt for mushrooms in the National Forest of Mount Parnassos. This is actually a thing! Something I have never heard of. One would not think to add mushroom hunting to their travel itinerary but I am so glad I had this experience. There are over 280 different types of mushrooms that can be found in the forest and it’s actually legal to pick them. However, it’s best to know what you are eating. One of many theories is the oracle of Delphi ate the fungi which gave her prophetic visions. These visions brought people from neighboring cities seeking out her advice including major leaders. While in a trance, she would answer their questions and make prophecies. One of the most fascinating things about this forest aside from mushrooms and the beautiful Kefalonia fir trees is the 3500 year old path through the forest that takes you straight to Delphi. I was completely overwhelmed at the thought thousands of years ago so many traveled this path seeking answers. Here I was just a small town U.S.A girl standing right where they stood. It was pretty incredible and something I’d certainly do again.

This photo makes me laugh. The men observing mushrooms on the path.
