Surprise of a Lifetime for My Sister-in-Law (We Made the News in the UK!)

April 8, 2014 By Amelia Old 1 Comment

With all of this writing and sharing my experiences in Bishops Lydeard….we ended making the news in the UK! I was absolutely delighted that the Somerset County Gazette shared the story of me surprising my sister in law-JoAnne.  Check it out by clicking on the photo below.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared the story of surprising my sister in law at her home days before her big Charity Event. You can read the post HERE.   I am so grateful the Gazette decided to share this as JoAnne will be running in the London Marathon THIS weekend! All of her hard work will pay off in a few days when she completes a major goal….all the while raising money for Children with Cancer UK. Want to sponsor JoAnne in her efforts? And here’s the video I originally posted that the Gazette mentioned in their article.

The Road Home: The Jolly Sailor

April 1, 2014 By Amelia Old 2 Comments

After an amazing few days with my family in the UK, my husband and I had to make our way back to London for our flight.

We decided to spend an entire day driving thru the Bristol/Bath area so that he could show me where he grew up and some of his favorite places.

For lunch, we stopped at The Jolly Sailor in between Bristol and Bath which is an awesome pub overlooking the Saltford Lock. The beer garden and conservatory were beautiful and I could kick myself for not taking photos of it!  The building was actually constructed in 1726!!

What’s a lunch at an English pub without FISH AND CHIPS?!

And it was DELICIOUS. Followed by, of course, Spotted Dick! Yum! Never heard of it? It’s a popular pudding in the UK that is usually served with custard as seen below.

The Saltford Lock and The Jolly Sailor are overlooked by the remains of the Kelston Mill which was in operation prior to 1767 all the way until the late 1840s.

Check out the amazing view near The Jolly Sailor.

The social media geek in me loved  how socially connected The Jolly Sailor is. They are extremely active on Facebook and Twitter and when we requested the WIFI info….they brought us a small chalk board with the info. They were prepared!

Check them out online so you can see the beautiful pub photos!

My visit to PodShavers and British Inspired Sunday Dinner Recipes

April 1, 2014 By Amelia Old Leave a Comment

As you know from my previous post, I recently had the opportunity to visit my family in the UK. On the Sunday before we headed back to America, we visited a restaurant in Bishops Lydeard called PodShavers Barn. This is a popular place among the locals for a good Sunday Roast.

The staff was super friendly to our group of 18!  Never a moment that a smile left their faces.  While we waited on our food, the children ran around and played in the adorable court yard. Look at this photo that was snapped of me with my beautiful niece and handsome nephews.

For a starter I had the smoked salmon with horseradish mayonnaise followed by a Roast Chicken with vegetables as my main course. After filling our bellies with the traditional Sunday dishes, we made our way back to the court yard where the children chose something from the “Sweets from the Board”. We also were able to capture a family photo…..all laughs as usual!

You can also view photos of the restaurant on their website at http://www.podshavers.co.uk

Podshavers gave me an experience of family, togetherness and of course The Sunday Roast. This is a traditional British Sunday Meal. It includes the main course which is a roast with side dishes such as vegetables, potatoes,  yorkshire pudding and of course you can’t forget the gravy! My husband reminds me of that often.

I am slowly beginning to cook more meals that give my husband a taste of home. It was a proud moment for me when at Christmas he asked that I make the Yorkshire Pudding because it’s better than his. I’ll share the recipe in a later post.

Many of my friends have requested ideas to create their own British Inspired Meals. So, I started a collection on Foodie.com of recipes for your own British inspired Sunday Dinner as shown above.

Easter is around the corner….create a meal out of the recipes I shared and send me photos! I’d love to see what you come up with.

This post is sponsored by Foodie.com and Glam Media however all opinions are solely those of the author’s.
